Paradoxus, a Latin term meaning “contrary to expectation”, is a Nashville-based Acid Jazz, R&B, Funk, and Soul collective led by bassist Richard Michaels. The term "acid jazz" was coined by French-English DJ Gilles Peterson in the mid-1980s in the London club scene.
Founded in 2024, the band primarily performs the music of Acid Jazz heavy weights such as The Brand New Heavies, Incognito, Count Basic, Blacknuss, Down To The Bone and others.
After moving to Nashville in 2022, “I checked out the Broadway scene but knew it wasn't for me!”, Michaels explains. “I tried joining classic rock bands,” he said, “but the music didn’t excite me, I needed and wanted to play the type of music I was passionate about. Paradoxus gives me that outlet.”
The core principle of the collective is to play great music and at the same time, introduce audiences to artists and music they may not have heard or been exposed to.
"There's is so much great music out there that needs to be heard. I wanted Paradoxus to be different and be the vehicle that presents this great music to audiences!", Michaels said.
